What is the Purpose of Colored Contacts?
Colored contacts are used for cosmetic purposes. They are usually worn by people who have darker eye colors or by cosplayers who want to look more like the character they are dressing up as. Colored contacts come in a variety of natural colors, like blues and greens, as well as some colors geared more toward cosplay, like red and purple.
How Can I Get Natural Looking Colored Contacts?
Before picking a pair, it’s important to do your research so you can determine which colored lenses will give you the look you’re going for. As we mentioned, there are two main groups of people who wear colored contacts, and with cosplayers being one of them, you can expect a lot of lenses to look a little cartoony. If you’re wanting a natural look, visit your optometrist. Most optometry offices sell FDA-approved colored contacts, plus you can go in for a fitting in order to pick the ones that look and work best for you.
Are Colored Contacts Safe to Wear?
Yes — colored contacts are safe to wear, as long as they are an FDA-approved brand and that you wear them according to the directions or as prescribed by your optometrist. They have been worn by many for years, and they are constantly being researched to improve comfort and to have a more natural look. If colored contacts are your first experience with any kind of contact lenses, keep in mind that they may feel uncomfortable until you get used to them.
Are Colored Contacts Hard to See Out Of?
In general, colored contacts are easy to see out of. However, colored contacts may not be so great when seeing in the dark. When it’s dark, our pupils dilate to a large size to try and see better, so they may get blocked by the colored ring on the lens. But, this doesn’t mean that your vision will be completely gone, just slightly obscured in the dark.
Can My Child Wear Colored Contacts?
Just the same as clear, prescription contact lenses, colored contacts are safe for kids starting around the age of eight, according to the FDA. However, consider two things if your child wants to wear colored contacts. One, consider if they are responsible enough to take care of and clean their lenses every day — this is important for their health. And two, consider why they want the contacts. Do they want them because they want to do a cosplay of their favorite character or do they dislike their natural eye color? It is important to talk with your child about these two things before simply ordering them a set of colored contacts.
Do I Need a Prescription for Colored Contacts?
Nope — a lot of people who wear colored contacts can see perfectly fine without a prescription. On the other hand, yes, colored contacts may include a prescription if you need them to. Non-prescription colored contacts are also great for those who love wearing their glasses but may not be fond of their darker natural eye color. It’s ultimately up to you if you want a prescription in your colored contacts!
How Should I Take Care of Colored Contacts?
Take care of your colored contacts in the same gentle way you would normal lenses. If they are disposable, they should be taken out and thrown away before bed. If they are long-wear, store them in a contact case and clean them with proper contact solution before putting them back in.
